Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre?
I love romance novels, but I found a lot of the ones I ended up reading were too “romanticized” and perfect. I wanted to write about real relationships and real people. My first published book is based on my relationship with my husband. My very bipolar husband. We have our ups and downs, but in the end it is our love that keeps us together and makes everything worth it. I wanted to write a book about love that lasts through the trials of life, so that’s what I did.
Where did your love of books/storytelling/reading/writing/etc. come from?
I was inspired to first start writing from an assignment my computer literacy teacher gave me in Junior High. She assigned us to write a story based on the book Ol’ Yeller but put it in modern times. I had fun writing that story and adding characters from my favorite TV show at the time NYPD Blue. I started writing a lot from there.
What do you think most characterizes your writing?
The element of realism and character flaws. Real people, real situations, real problems. I deal with unplanned pregnancies, mental health issues, health issues, things that happen in real life. Things that people have to work through. I’ve also been told I write male characters very well.
What projects are you working on at the present?
I have two projects going on right now. The first is a series of three books called Love Grows Wild, and I am co-writing it with my friend Amber Root. The series, at the beginning, is about two teenagers who end up in a long distance relationship and it extends to their journey to adulthood. And how their relationship grows and falls throughout the years. It’s been fun to deal with these two characters. And it is also been interesting to put realism into a young adult book, showing what healthy relationships are and what issues comes up between the two of them.
The second is a novella that is going to be the fourth book in my current series, And Then Came Love.
What do your plans for future projects include?
There are so many projects for the future. I have three more books and two more novellas in my And Then Came Love series. I have more books that I am working on with my co-writer Amber Root. We also have another anthology planned out with my publisher.
